CyanogenMod Team Shows Ice Cream Sandwich Running on HP TouchPad

CyanogenMod 9 is creeping closer and closer to release, and we're seeing it running on more devices all the time - the first ones to get development builds were mostly Samsung phones, but a video has been posted of the Ice Cream Sandwich-based OS running on the HP TouchPad. This is the latest development in the Android-on-TouchPad saga, which began not a week after HP discounted the TouchPad and dumped all of its inventory.
Video playback and the front-facing camera are apparently not working yet, but otherwise the port seems to be running smoothly. As with the Gingerbread-based TouchPad CyanogenMod betas that have been floating around for awhile now, users can choose to dual boot their machines into either Android or WebOS.
CyanogenMod 9 is set to be officially released this month or next, and will eventually support almost everything currently supported by CyanogenMod 7. According to one of its developers, the CyanogenMod distribution currently boasts over one million active users.

Tried Koush's Alpha 11/12, and while pretty good for alpha builds the interface just seemed sluggish, wholly apart from the new (and bad IMO, less flick-ey and more stick-ey, ymmv) scrolling algorithms in ICS. The Cyanogenmod developers don't like being asked for ETA's, but their last update was six weeks ago, hopefully we'll get some news for non-touchpad devices soon.EnzoFX - Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - link

Did you try a different launcher? The default one is crappy. ADW EX is MUCH smoother as is go launcher. Not perfect, but a whole lot better than the bundled launcher.webmastir - Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - link

I hope its more stable than Gingerbread CM7. I've had that on my TP for a couple of weeks and have experienced several crashes, reboots, one touchscreen crash, and twice I've lost downloaded apps with no explanation. And that was all with very sporadic use in the first 3 days after downloading it. I certainly haven't pushed it. On the plus side, theres a ton more toys to download on Android than poor webOS.I hope ICS will fix these problems. Maybe I'd use the thing a little more, at least initially just for kicks. Overall, tablets feel like rather useless gadgets if you have a halfway decent PC around. I knew that before jumping in and I still feel the same afterwards.

I have found some nice uses for my TouchPad. I use it while watching TV/movies to check what's going on in Facebook and such. When I'm travelling, I find it a lot easier to watch movies on the TP than on a laptop whenever there isn't a table available. It's also something I take with me to the toilet, it's nice to read some comics while doing other "business" at the same time.When a proper ICS port is released for the TP, I believe I'll use it even more as more apps become available than there are in the HP AppCatalogue. Such as the free XBMC Remote.

There's also a fairly decent working alpha of CM9 on the Nook Color. Everything works for the most part, but unfortunately, HW acceleration is not working due to no updated GPU drivers. I installed it on my hp touchpad, and for the most part it works fine, there are a couple of glitches, I guess the biggest is turning it on, when I go to turn it on, I have to hold the power button and the home button, ne idea why?
